Rishi Jamadagni

Jamadagni was son of Sage Rucheeka and Satyavathi and he belongs to Bhrigu lineage. He married Renuka and blessed with 5 sons. The last one was Parasuram. One day, Jamadagni smelt that his wife delayed bringing sacred water from the river and the reason was that she was watching a handsome Gandharva by name Chitraradha taking bath in the river. Jamadagni ordered his son to cut off her head. Parasuram followed his instructions. Pleased with this, he gave a boon to his son. Parasuram asked to bring back his mother to life as her sin, if any, was already washed away with her death. Jamadagni brought back his wife to life and also granted another boon that Parasuram would become chiranjeevi (very very long life). It is believed that Parasuram is still alive on the Earth. Later, a king by name Kartaveerya abused Jamadagni and Parasuram did not spare him and killed him. Kartaveerya’s sons took revenge on Parasuram and killed Jamadagni in the absence of Parasuram. Outraged with this, he took oath to kill Kshatriyas (only bad guys) and conquered the entire earth for 21 times and eliminated most of the bad kings and cleansed the Earth. As a remark to his victory, he established 5 ponds which were called Samanthaka Panchakam in the vicinity of Kurukshetra. Jamadagni was considered to be one of the greatest sages and in one of the Manvantara’s, he was designated one among Sapta rishis.
